What are Changing Places?

The Changing Places Consortium was set up in 2005 and works tirelessly to support the rights of those with profound learning and/or physical disabilities.

In the UK, 1 in every 260 people needs access to a Changing Places toilet when they’re away from their homes.

The consortium’s long running campaign for Changing Places facilities to be installed in all large public spaces has become well known, bringing with it an increased public and Government awareness of the importance of giving those people the ability to access their communities.

Needs & Requirements

Some of the many public spaces a Changing Rooms facility might be expected are Department Stores, Sports Stadiums and Train Stations.

Certain standards must be met to ensure the facility meets the needs and expectations of the user.

Minimum size

These include a minimum room size of 12 square metres (3 X 4m) and a minimum height of 2.4m wherever possible, ensuring adequate space for the disabled person and two carers.

Toilet

A centrally placed toilet and a washbasin are a necessity, as are non-slip flooring, a large waste bin, a privacy screen, and a wide tear-off paper roll dispenser.

Bench and hoist

A height adjustable adult sized bench is also required, as is a tracking or mobile hoist system.

Shower

A shower isn’t a requirement, but should always be a consideration in relevant buildings.
